The song “Sweeter Cup” came about in a gradual sort of way. Brad was experimenting with some different guitar voicings and stumbled upon this chord progression, which stuck in his head for several months. The lyrics came out of nowhere starting with the line “I get the feeling that I’d rather be a thousand miles out on the sea” and evolved naturally from there. Heading into the studio, this was one of the more daunting songs the band would tackle, and no one knew exactly how it would come together. But as each band member added their piece of the puzzle, something special started to emerge! The working title was “Moving On,” but since that is possibly the most common song title in music history, something more distinctive was needed. Greg pushed hard to call it “Sweeter Cup,” and in a moment of elation upon completing the recording, Brad agreed. With influences ranging from James Taylor to Santana to The Who, this one makes a great companion piece for “Greatest Wonders.”
