From the recording Laverna
When Steve Allen joined the group in 2014, he and Brad began having conversations about working together on a song. So Brad dug around in his pile of unused lyrics looking for something that might get them started. The song that ultimately resulted was called “Ivory Tower,” which deals with the universal theme of change. While there was no tune in mind when the lyrics were written, Steve approached the music from an entirely different perspective and the result represents a blend of both songwriting styles. Greg added the mandolin riffs and this song was played as a trio for almost a year. But as new members joined the band, the song evolved even further. Parker’s bass rhythms influenced the cadence, most notably on the chorus, in a way that gave the song new life. And Jennie’s subtle percussion work (love those cymbals!) lifted it even further. The resulting track from the studio is a true collaboration in every respect.
