"Bards Of Wales" is based on a poem by Janos Arany written in 1857. Arany was actually requested to write a song of praise for the visit of Franz Joseph I of Austria. But instead, he wrote the tale of 500 Welsh bards sent to the stake by Edward I of England for failing to sing his praises, intended as a metaphor to criticize Hapsburg rule over Hungary.
